International Mother Language Day holds a very special place in the hearts of Bangladeshi people, and Bangladesh Society SC observes this day with deep respect and cultural pride.
Each year on February 21, we remember the brave individuals of the 1952 Language Movement—heroes who sacrificed their lives to protect the right to speak Bangla. Their courage continues to inspire generations and stands as a powerful example of love for one’s mother tongue.
Our annual program is designed to celebrate the beauty and significance of the Bangla language. Through engaging activities for youth, families, and community members, we encourage everyone to stay connected to their linguistic roots and understand the cultural importance of this day.
The event includes:
- Creative art and writing workshops
- Poetry recitations
- Children’s performances
- Cultural presentations
- Reflections on the history and legacy of the Language Movement
Young participants join drawing sessions, storytelling circles, and recitation activities that help them learn about February 21 in a meaningful and memorable way. Parents, educators, and community members come together to honor the martyrs, celebrate diversity, and uphold the message of linguistic unity.
For Bangladeshi-Canadians, International Mother Language Day is more than a historical date—it is a reminder of the responsibility we share in preserving our language for the next generation. By celebrating this day collectively, we strengthen our cultural identity and ensure that our heritage remains alive within the community.
We invite everyone to join us each year as we honor International Mother Language Day with respect, creativity, and cultural pride.
